About the Show
Follow the fantastical musical journey of a would-be college hippie from 1970 who finds herself in 2010 waging battle for a healthier world. Victoria Johnston is a young college student itching to join the progressive fights roiling campuses in 1970 but is blocked by competing feelings for her conservative parents and her brother who died in Vietnam. For Victoria, it may just be a matter of time…
Flash ahead to 2010 where Liberty is ready to jump in to those civic battles, but finds herself in a seemingly can't-do world. With the help of quirky comrades past and present, she sets off to awaken a dormant populace to the challenges of the day. Amidst the zany and fanciful story, a serious and timely question pervades: What will we do for Liberty?
About the Creator: Philip Vlahakis is a New York-based musical theater writer devoted to stories and songs that both entertain and raise relevant human questions. Liberty in a New World (composer, lyricist, and co-author with Nathan Carver) was a finalist for the 2020 Rave Theater Festival and raises the specter of a complacent citizenry. Philip's original full-length show, Spirit of the Game: The Ultimate Musical, (2025 selection Florida Festival of New Musicals), explores how a sport’s emphasis on self-regulation and sportsmanship has resonance beyond the sporting world. Philip is also the composer for the new sci-fi musical R.U.R., (Spark Theater Festival selection 2025), with book and lyrics by Dennis Hanrahan and based on the prescient and cautionary 1920 play by Karel Čapek. Philip holds a certificate of dramatic writing from the Dramatists Guild Institute, is a member of Unmuted: Musical Theater Writers’ group, and is a member of the Dramatists Guild of America, Inc.
